Week 30: Psalm 120-Proverbs 9

July 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Mia:  Proverbs talks all about the importance of wisdom. Wisdom is probably one of the most important characteristics. It effects everything you do. If you don’t use wisdom, you won’t make a good choices, and if you don’t make good choices you won’t choose God. And if you don’t have God, well you can’t have eternal life in heaven. Very important!

Ian:  There’s probably no better way to teach a young man about wisdom and folly than to personify them as women.  Besides, who wants to be a loaf of bread?

Either way, the pursuer of wisdom should listen well to the teacher of old.

“The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works,
before his deeds of old;

I was appointed from eternity,
from the beginning, before the world began.

When there were no oceans, I was given birth,
when there were no springs abounding with water;

before the mountains were settled in place,
before the hills, I was given birth,

before he made the earth or its fields
or any of the dust of the world.

I was there when he set the heavens in place,
when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,

when he established the clouds above
and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,

when he gave the sea its boundary
so the waters would not overstep his command,
and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.

Then I was the craftsman at his side.
I was filled with delight day after day,
rejoicing always in his presence,

rejoicing in his whole world
and delighting in mankind.  Proverbs 8:22-31.

Mindy:  We need to stop at Walgreens to drop off my prescription.
Ian:  Alright.  We can go through the drive-through.
Mindy:  Actually, I need to go in, too.  To get my over-the-counter medicine.
Ian:  Okay.  Are you okay to go in by yourself?
Mindy:  We can all go in.
Ian:  Yeah–  Well–
Mindy:  …
Ian:  It’s just that I don’t want Emmeline’s first place ever to be Walgreens.
Mindy:  Gotcha.

Allow me to preface this post with a Facebook status update from earlier this month:

Now…

Ian:  …and then we can go to Red Robin for lunch.  Is that a “good idea?”
Joshua:  That’s a great good idea.

Week 29: Psalm 96-119

July 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Mia:  David uses many different words to describe God’s law.

statutes
precepts
decrees
commands
your word
counselors
your way

In Psalm 119, David makes it clear that God’s Law and how much he loves it and wants to obey it is the main subject of this “poem.”  It’s amazing how many different ways he can describe that subject and make it a beautiful poem.  God gave him that wonderful talent of writing.

Ian:  I found these two triplets interesting.

O house of Israel, trust in the LORD—
he is their help and shield.

O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD—
he is their help and shield.

You who fear him, trust in the LORD—
he is their help and shield.  Psalm 115:9-11.

Let Israel say:
“His love endures forever.”

Let the house of Aaron say:
“His love endures forever.”

Let those who fear the LORD say:
“His love endures forever.”  Psalm 118:2-4.

Also, I’m convicted by David’s passion for God’s law.  Seriously.  All he had was Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.  I have those books and so many more, yet–
