Week 21: Jeremiah 26-48

Mia:  As I was reading Jeremiah, I realized that every few paragraphs of prophecy, it says:  declares the LORD Almighty or Says the LORD.  I like that because then you don’t think, oh, this is Jeremiah speaking.  You actually realized, the LORD is speaking this through Jeremiah the Prophet.  Sometimes I forget that.  Also, I think it’s really cool that God put the words of prophecy in Jeremiah’s mouth.  Because it would be hard to remember all that!

Ian:  These few verses in Jeremiah 33 beautifully illustrate God’s vow of faithfulness to his people.

The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: “This is what the LORD says: ‘If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night no longer come at their appointed time, then my covenant with David my servant—and my covenant with the Levites who are priests ministering before me—can be broken and David will no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne. I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars of the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.’ “

The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: “Have you not noticed that these people are saying, ‘The LORD has rejected the two kingdoms he chose’? So they despise my people and no longer regard them as a nation. This is what the LORD says: ‘If I have not established my covenant with day and night and the fixed laws of heaven and earth, then I will reject the descendants of Jacob and David my servant and will not choose one of his sons to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and have compassion on them.’ “  Verses 19-26.

Week 20: Jeremiah 1-25

Mia: At the end of chapter 13 in Jeremiah God says, “How long will you be unclean?” Didn’t that start way back in Exodus? Didn’t the Israelites start not being faithful and sinning way back then? God said, “Woe to you, O Jerusalem!” just before he asked them how long they will be unclean. The people of Jerusalem are the great, great (and on and on) grandchildren of the Israelites and they haven’t changed! Wow.

Ian: Building on the theme of compassion in last week’s entry about Isaiah, I’m finding the mentions of compassion from what I’ve read in Jeremiah interesting. Most instances in the book so far state it negatively (e.g. “I can no longer show compassion”).
