Week 8: Numbers 18-34

February 26, 2009 · 3 Comments

Mia:  The LORD did so much for the Israelites.  He gave them manna, quail and water.  He handed over to them all their enemies.  Even when they complained so much!  There were hundreds and thousands of Israelites, too!  So, if he will provide for thousands of hungry, complaining people traveling through a desert, of course he will take care of one person, me!  I don’t feel like I ever want to doubt or complain to the LORD ever again!

Ian:  When Balak tried to get Balaam to go against God, I’m reminded of when the devil tried to get Jesus to go against God (Matthew 4).  There were multiple attempts in various settings (in increasing elevation?) only to be rebuffed by the words from God himself.

When Balak was done with Balaam, God spoke of salvation for Israel and destruction of their enemies.

When the devil was done with Jesus, God brought salvation to Israel and destroyed their enemies.

Actually, that’s not it.  Rather…

…angels came and attended him.  Matthew 4:11.

Suspense.

Also, allow me to share my favorite quote from the late Dr. Joe Aldrich.

If God can use Balaam’s ass, he can use us.

We’ll miss you Dr. Joe!

Joshua (3):  After my cereal, I have a treat?
Mindy:  No.
Joshua:  I like treats.
Mindy:  I know you like treats.
Joshua:  Please?
Mindy:  Nope.
Joshua:  (Big cheesy smile.)
Mindy:  That won’t get you treats.

Diligent Durias

Mondays are “Big Chore Day” at the Durias house.  After Aidan (7) finished his list he decided, without being asked, to use the hose attachment to vacuum the seats of the chairs around our dining table. When he was done, he asked Mindy…

What else can I do?

My college chum Jeremy heard Syd ask, “Mom?  Why did God make Jackson so annoying?” Creation, check. The Fall, check.

Week 7: Numbers 3-17

Mia:  In chapters 11-15 in Numbers and more in Exodus the Israelites are always complaining! I was getting annoyed just reading about them! As I was reading these chapters, I was almost feeling bad for Moses. I felt like saying: Who brought you through the red sea and got you out of Egypt? Who’s giving you laws so you won’t hurt your self or others? Who promised you a land flowing with milk and honey? GOD! And you are doubting him! And even Miriam and Aaron were talking against Moses for marrying a Cushite woman. Poor Moses. I bet he just wanted to leave the Israelites altogether. But he didn’t, because he trusted GOD.

Ian:

While the Israelites were in the desert, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day. Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him. Then the LORD said to Moses, “The man must die. The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp.” So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD commanded Moses.  Numbers 15:32-36.

Disturbing.

God says “I am the Lord your God,” or something like it, several times in Leviticus and Numbers.  Typically, he says it just once at a time.  Here, God goes for the hat-trick.

I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD your God.’ “  Numbers 15:41.

It’s like he gives the reader the ol’ one-two only with three punches.

You may remember this. Well, I heard Paige (6) tell Papa Bob this:

Do you know that all the Circuit Cities in the whole world are closing down? I’m so happy!
