Week 4: Exodus 13-32

January 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Makaena:  In Exodus chapters 20-23 it lists all the laws God gave to Moses to tell the Israelites. There is a lot. I was thinking, if I were an Israelite, I’d say, “Does God actually believe I can do all that?! I can’t even remember all that!” But then I thought that God would never give us a job we can’t do. We can do it, all we need is faith. But thankfully, we don’t have to follow all those laws any more because Jesus has died for us. So, our sins our forgiven. Praise the Lord!

Ian:

If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, return it to him by sunset, because his cloak is the only covering he has for his body. What else will he sleep in? When he cries out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.  Exodus 22:26-27.

Compassion literally means “to suffer with” and it’s illustrated well here.

I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts-to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of craftsmanship.  Exodus 31:3-5.

I think this is the earliest mention of the “filling of the Spirit.”  In this case, Bezalel was filled by the Spirit with “skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts.”

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy.  Exodus 31:12-13.

I keep the Sabbath and the Sabbath keeps me.

Week 3: Genesis 43-Exodus 12

January 22, 2009 · 2 Comments

God also said to Moses, “I am the LORD. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them. I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they lived as aliens. Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant. Exodus 6:2-5.

Makaena: These words God spoke to Moses all of a sudden made me so happy! I felt joy jump in my heart. I felt secure and safe. It made me remember that the LORD keeps his promises, and that he is always there for us when we need him.

Ian:  Injustice is illustrated in Exodus 5 when the Israelites, already enslaved, are forced to make bricks without the key ingredient of straw while still being required to produce just as many bricks. If they missed their quota, the consequences were dire. Injustice is also illustrated in the following verses. Joseph’s brothers, who sold him into slavery under the premise of him being killed, forcing their dad into mourning, were treated unfairly–they didn’t get what they deserved.

His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. “We are your slaves,” they said. But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them. Genesis 50:18-26.

Obama On Poverty

January 21, 2009 · Leave a Comment

To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world’s resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.
