Last night, we had dinner at Koji Osakaya.
Paige (5): This is Chinese food, right?
Ian: No. It’s Japanese food.
Paige: Oh. Right. Japanese. Lola is Chinese, right?
Ian: No. She’s Filipino.
Paige. Yeah. Jalapeño.
Ian: Filipino.
Paige. Oh. Filipino.

Asher (3, pointing): Look! That’s my little sister.
Makaena: Is she your older sister or younger sister?
Asher: She’s just my little sister. I hug her and kiss her. (Hugs and kisses her.) See how that works?

If you’re ever in Clear Lake, Iowa…

Eat lunch at Shao Ting Guo. It’s “the best Chinese food in all of northern Iowa.” I choose to believe that. But don’t go for dinner because I hear you get less and it’s more expensive. And when they say a dish is spicy, they mean it. Especially since “some people in Iowa think that ketchup is hot.”
